Wolverhampton Wanderers have sacked manager Dean Saunders following the club’s relegation to League One.

Saunders took over at Molineux following the sacking of Norwegian Stale Solbakken.

The 48-year-old Welshman failed to keep Doncaster Rovers in the Championship after took over at the Keepmoat Stadium in September 2011. However, he left them in second place in League One before succumbing to the temptations of trying to lead Wolves back to the promise land.

Meanwhile his former club, Doncaster under manager Brian Flynn, were promoted in dramatic circumstances on the final day of the season as champions.

Saunders, who started his managerial career with Wrexham, won five, drew five and lost 10 of his games as Wolves manager before they were relegated on the final day of the season following a 2-0 defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion.

The club are now looking for their fourth manager since they sacked Mick McCarthy in February 2012.

A statement on Wolves’ official website said: “Manager Dean Saunders has been informed by Wolves that his contract is to be terminated. The decision has been made following confirmation of Wolves’ relegation to Npower League One.

“Assistant manager Brian Carey will also be leaving the club.

“Wolves have now begun a recruitment process, which in conjunction with the board will be managed by head of football development & recruitment Kevin Thelwell.

“The club will now take as long as is necessary to make this crucial appointment and there will be no publicly communicated timescales.

“Wolves would like to thank Dean and Brian for their efforts in what has been a very difficult period for everyone, and wish them both the very best for the future.

“The club will be making no further comment at this stage.”
