Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will miss game one against the New York Islanders

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will not play in tonight’s Game One match against the New York Islanders.

The 25-year-old saw the doctor on Tuesday but despite a positive reaction he was not cleared to feature for the Penguins.

Crosby told the NHL side’s website: “He [the doctor] said everything looks good, he just wasn’t prepared to clear me to play.”

“Obviously I would have loved to have the chance to play tonight, but it’s not the way it is and I’ll make sure I’m ready when the time comes.”

Despite not having another visit with the doctor scheduled, it still remains unclear as to when the influential captain will return to the ice.

“[The doctor] just said that he’ll be in touch with me, to let him know if I feel anything different,” Crosby added.

“But I’m sure he’ll be around and checking up things pretty closely.”

Crosby skated on the fifth line on Wednesday morning but he did not take part in power play practice. He worked one-on-one with strength and conditioning coach Mike Kadar before team practice.

The Penguins’ skipper missed the final 12 games of the regular season after breaking his jaw during a match against the Islanders in March.

He returned to team practice last week after spending 10 days skating with Kadar.
